Landmarks of the Grand Mosque
The Holy Kaaba
The Kaaba is the first house of worship established for mankind, and it is believed that its construction dates back to before the time of the Prophet Adam, peace be upon him. It is a cube-shaped structure located in the middle of the Mataf (circumambulation) area, and Muslims from around the world face it during their prayers. Pilgrims and Umrah performers circle it seven times, in a majestic scene that continues throughout the day.
Black Stone
Located in the eastern corner of the Kaaba, it is a black gemstone believed to have descended from heaven. The circumambulation begins around it, and the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) used to kiss it, so many visitors seek to kiss or touch it, if they can.
Yemeni Corner
It is one of the pillars of the Kaaba, located before reaching the Black Stone during the circumambulation. The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, used to touch it with his hand, which made it one of the Sunnahs followed during the circumambulation.
Maqam Ibrahim
Located opposite the door of the Kaaba, it houses a stone bearing the footprints of the Prophet Abraham, peace be upon him, when he stood on it to raise the foundations of the Kaaba. Today, the shrine is covered by a transparent golden dome, highlighting its historical and religious significance.
hejr ismail
A semicircular area adjacent to the Kaaba on the northern side, believed to have been part of the original Kaaba. It was named “Al-Hijr” (The Stone) because it was the refuge of the Prophet Abraham and his son Ishmael (peace be upon them).
masaa
Located east of the Grand Mosque, it extends between the hills of Safa and Marwa. Pilgrims and Umrah performers perform the Sa’i ritual there, commemorating the story of Hajar, peace be upon her, as she sought water for her son, Ismail.
Zamzam water
The Well of Zamzam is associated with the miracle of water gushing forth for Hajar and her son. Today, it is located beneath the Mataf (circumambulation) area, and Zamzam water is supplied throughout the mosque via containers and mashrabiyas, at temperatures suitable for visitors.
minarets
The Grand Mosque has 13 towering minarets, whose call to prayer fills the sky with a voice that fills the sky. The first minaret was built during the reign of the Abbasid Caliph Abu Ja’far al-Mansur and features a unique five-part design.
sermon pulpit
The current pulpit of the Grand Mosque was built in 1423 AH (2002 AD). It is made of fine marble and equipped with modern technology and electric wheels, allowing it to be moved easily within the sanctuary.
Mosque doors
The Grand Mosque has 210 doors, designed to facilitate the entry and exit of visitors from various directions. They are made of the finest wood and decorated with copper.
